Decathlon Automates its Stores in Russia

Challenge

The checkout program of European origin was technologically outdated; it was no longer supported by the developer and required a lot of resources for maintenance.

The Decathlon chain in Russia needed to:

  • cut the ownership costs of the checkout solution in the Russian stores;

  • have the checkout software that would support all changes in the Russian legislation;

  • introduce any types of cash registers, including self-checkouts (SCO);

  • easily integrate checkout software with any external systems and acquiring banks;

  • and have an architecture with no servers in the stores.

All Decathlon cash register solutions – mobile cash registers and self-shopping – will be operated by a single Set Retail core

Outcome

  1. Service acceleration by 5 %
    Even new employees easily grasp the intuitive Set Retail interface, with the cashiers reporting reduced manual operations.
  2. Easy integration with the external systems
    The retailer needed an integration bus for data exchange between the checkout software, its own ERP, and the loyalty system. The CSI specialists offered their Set ESB module able to integrate with the e-store: buyers who order online will be able to pay for goods at the checkout.
  3. Cost reduction
    The ownership and the checkout solution maintenance costs, as well as the number of the servers have been reduced; and the fault tolerance of the system has been increased. The expenses related to violations of the legislation have been eliminated. The compact receipt function of the CSI’s Pirit fiscal recorders will reduce the cash tape costs.
  4. Work in full compliance with the Russian law
    The CSI provides free updates of Set Retail in case of any changes in the legislation to avoid prescriptive orders from the regulatory authorities or fines.
  5. First self-checkouts in the fashion segment
    All Decathlon checkout solutions – mobile cash registers and self-shopping – will be operated by a single Set Retail core. The first self-service island has already been chosen by more than 40 % of buyers. Transfer of 6 checkout counters from the classic line to the new format reduced queues during the rush hours and the load on the staff. The checkout counter has a recess with a RFID reader and a handheld scanner for goods with no tag or for reading shoe labels. To operate RFID, Set SCO interface has been improved, and integration with the RFID tag reading systems on collars has been configured. The project took 32 working days to implement.
